THE DESERT
The Black Rock Desert provides an ideal canvas for many beautiful, exciting, and unique experiences. Home of the highest rocket launch, numerous land speed records, and the largest desert arts festival in the world; it’s no surprise that something as innovative as Black Rock Mud Company was founded here.
This alluring and serene setting is where Native American Indians, Cavalry Troopers, and California-bound pioneers (including John Fremont), discovered a healing and therapeutic sanctuary. They revitalized and renewed by soaking in the natural mineral hot springs and mud pots.
Today people continue to journey here from all corners of the world to connect with nature and experience the restorative power of the earth. From this solitary oasis we pay tribute to this ritual by hand harvesting and personally packaging each individual “Black Rock Desert Experience” just for you.
THE HARVEST
In an area of the Black Rock Desert, known as the Great Boiling Springs, mineral-rich mud finds it’s way to the earth’s surface through small bubbling mud volcanoes and mudpots. These geological features erupt sporadically producing a limited volume of mud each year. All of our mud is carefully hand harvested to help protect and preserve the precious resource.
In order to ensure long-term sustainability, Black Rock Mud Company carefully monitors both the Spring and Fall harvests. The mud is then packaged, and the quantity of jars available for that harvest is determined.
Much like the production of fine wine, some years yield a better harvest than others-and in the same way a wine grower manages his vineyard, no mud is harvested before its time. Once each “crop” is gathered in, we wait with anticipation for the next harvest.
THE PRODUCTS
